Notes on Hollacombe Oath Takers, 1723

The following notes on Hollacombe oath-takers were compiled by Mrs. Pat Williams from parish registers and other records.

Oaths sworn at The George, Holsworthy,12 Sept. 1723 before William Bickford and Richard Yeo esqs.

SARAH ALLEN: Married John Allen 10 July 1704. Children's christenings: Thomas 1 Apr. 1714, Sarah 4 Sept. 1729.

THOMAS BROWNE: Christened 15 July 1677. Married Mary Warmington 5 April 1715 at Kilkhampton. Children's christenings: Elizabeth 22 July 1716 note on registers: "She was born on 3 July". Elizabeth was buried 25 Fen 1725; William 8 October 1723 note on register "Who was born on Sept 22". Charly15 Sept 1727. Thomas Browne was buried 19 June 1736 and his wife Mary was buried 28 Nov.1738.

Thomas' parents: Thomas christened March 1642 son of John & Marlyn who married Elizabeth Sleeman 23 May 1671. Elizabeth was buried 17 March 1678.

MARY DAVIS: Christening 11 June 1661. Married Thomas Davis 20 Oct. 1691. Children's christenings: John 19 June 1699, Ann 14 Aug. 1701. Thomas Davis was buried 5 Feb. 1725, and Mary 20 Feb. 1725. Mary's Parents were George & Sibeth Davy. George is referred to in a terrier of 19 March 1679 -"the lands of Mrs. Cilchester in the possession of George Davy and Robert Pearce bounded by Glebe Land."

JOHN METHERELL sen: Married Jane, 7 June 1681 at Cookbury. Children's christenings: John,(jnr) 26 Jan. 1685, William 1 Nov. 1683, married Elizabeth Allyn 19 Dec. 1709. Elizabeth buried "her son" 18 Sept 1734. Johan 2 Feb 1690, Jane was buried 28 Nov. 1694. John Metherell sen was churchwarden in 1684 when the third Bell was hung and has his name on it.

JOHN METHERELL jun: Christened 26 Jan. 1685 parents John sen & Jane. Married 11 May 1703 to Anne Eamoy, who was buried in Holsworthy 6 Nov 1719. Children's christenings: Jane 4 Jan. 1704, Mary 5 June 1705, Roger 1705 (twin of Mary?), Elizabeth 27 Mar. 1707, Grace 26 Apr. 1709, Anne 8 June 1714, Joane 24 Jan 1715, Charity 30 Jan 1717. C Metherell buried 19 May 1737.

JOHN HOCKADAY: His name does not appear on any of the parish registers from 1640 to 1738. Burials register: 16 Nov, 1737 Mary Hockaday buried by John.

JOSEPH LASHBROOK(E): Married 23 Mar. 1697 to Mary Dimond. Children's christenings: Elizabeth 14 Mar.1698, Elizabeth 24 Apr. 1700, Mary 17 May 1705.
