Broad Clyst, Deanery of Ailesbeare

Chanter 225A, 238-239

  1. Population and dissenters: As the Parish of Broadclyst is very extensive, I cannot exactly determine the number of Families contained in it; but the number of souls, according to the truest Calculation, amount to about three thousand. There are only two Dissenters in the Parish, the one an Independent, and the other a Quaker. There is no licenced, or other Meeting House.

  2. Public or charity schools: There is a public school for teaching Children to read, endowed with a Salary of about three Pounds a year, payable out of some Lands in the parish; there are about twelve Children at present taught in it, and care is taken to instruct them in the Principles of the Christian Religion, according to the Doctrine of the Church of England, and they are duely brought to Church.

  3. Alms-house, hospital or charitable endowment: There is an Alms House containing twelve Dwellings for poor People. I know of no Lands or Tenements for the Repair of the Church. I have not yet discovered any Frauds.

  4. Residence upon cure: By his Lordship’s Favour I reside at Tiverton, upon a public Grammar School, to which I am licenced.

  5. Curate: I have a residing Curate named John Taylor; He is duly qualifyed, and lives in the Parsonage House, I allow him thirty five Pounds a year, and Surplice Fees.

  6. Divine service at other churches: No.

  7. Frequency of divine service: Twice every Lord’s Day with Sermons; and also upon Holidays as appointed by the Church.

  8. Frequency of communion: Four Times, at Easter, Whitsunday, Michaelmass and Christmass.

  9. Number of communicants: About fourscore; threescore generally receive, and there was near about that number at Easter last past.

  10. Catechising of children: The Children are particularly catechized in Lent, and frequently also in the Summer.

  11. Chapels or chapels in ruins: There is one <Private> Chapel in the Parish of Broadclist called Colomb John adjoining to the seat of that name and belonging to the Family [query]1 distant from the parish Church about two miles, served at present by the Revd Mr Troyte. We have no Chapel in Ruins. Wm Daddo.
