Chanter 225A, 3-4

  1. Population and dissenters: The Number of Families is about 75.
    No Family of Dissenters.
    One dissenting Person who is a Presbyterian.
    No Meeting House or Teacher.

  2. Public or charity schools: There is a Charity School endowd by the late Sir Thomas Putt with £10 a year for 20 poor Children within the Parish. The Endowment is regularly paid by his Heir Reymundo Putt Esqr who has built a very convenient House for the Use of the Schoolmaster. 20 poor Children are now taught in it: & all due Care is taken of their Learning & Principles. They attend Church Sundays & Holidays & have a Place appropriated for them.

  3. Alms-house, hospital or charitable endowment: There is neither Alms-house, Hospital or any Endowment for Repair of the Church. But we have Lands to the value of about £50 a year for the use of such poor People as have no Relief of the Parish. The Direction of it is in the Hands of 12 of the principal Inhabitants. The receiving Feoffee annually makes up his Account at a publick Parish meeting And the Income is dispos’d of according to the Will of the Donor Henry Beaumont Esqr.

  4. Residence upon cure: I reside in Ottery St. Mary the adjoining Parish on Account of the School & Vicarage which I have there. I constantly officiate every other Sunday.

  5. Curate: My Curate’s Name is Thomas Lee ordaind Priest & licens’d by your Lordship Septr 25th 1743. He lives with me. I allow him £30 a year & Perquisites of the Parish & £20 a year more with the Perquisites of the School for his assisting me in it.

  6. Divine service at other churches: I do not: unless a Neighbour be sick or absent on Business.

  7. Frequency of divine service: Upon Holidays, twice every Lords Day with a sermon in the morning & a sermon or Lecture on the Catechism in the Afternoon.

  8. Frequency of communion: Six Times a year.

  9. Number of communicants: The Number of Comunicants are upwards of 80.
    Between 40 & 50 usually receive.
    The Number Easter Day last was 65.

  10. Catechising of children: The Children of the Charity School are catechis’d 3 Times a year (viz) Shrovetide Midsummer & Michaelmas. The rest of the Parish every other Sunday beginning at Mid Lent Sunday till about the middle of July. They are in general very ready to come & well instructed.

  11. Chapels or chapels in ruins: There is no Chappel: nor any tradition of there ever having been one.
