Inwardleigh, Deanery of Okehampton

Chanter 225A, 366-367

  1. Population and dissenters: The number of families in my Parish are about sixty, one of them are dissenters under the denomination of Presbyterians who rent a small estate.

  2. Public or charity schools: Here is no public charity School endow’d or otherwise maintain’d in my Parish, but some particular women here and there teach some few that are sent to them. Others learn at home of their Parents: and I take what care I can to instruct them in the Xtian Religion.

  3. Alms-house, hospital or charitable endowment: Here is not Alms house Hospitall or other Charity endowment only fifty shillings a year paid out of an estate in Crediton given by one Mr Newcome to our Poor; and the Interest of two bonds which brings nine shillings more for which we have security, and our Poor have it duly paid them by me and our overseers. We have no Lands to repair our Church but by Church Rates.

  4. Residence upon cure: I reside personally upon my Cure and in my Parsonage house.

  5. Curate: I have no Curate as before &c.

  6. Divine service at other churches: No, unless to help a Brother in times of Sickness and like &c.

  7. Frequency of divine service: I generally perform divine service in my church twice a day every Lords day with a sermon in the morning and in the evening too in Summertime: and read prayers on other days according to the Rubrick or by publick authority commanded &c.

  8. Frequency of communion: Five times a year, twice at Easter once at Whitsunday, and at Michalemas and at Xmas.

  9. Number of communicants: I think I have about two hundred Communicants in my Parish (I mean that are past the age of sixteen) and about half come to the sacrament usually in the year: particularly at Easter about eighty; some (for want of confirmation) think themselves too young, some have not cloaths enough and some have excuses, I tell them publickly & privately but all will not do.

  10. Catechising of children: I catechize in Lent and on some Sundays at the latter end of Summer and expound in the afternoon on some part or other of the catechism: but they do not many of them send their children and servants, as I would have them do, though I particularly call their families by name and appoint the times &c.

  11. Chapels or chapels in ruins: I have no Chapel within my Parish.
