  1. Population and dissenters: [Entered in the margin]: How many Fam. in Teignton Bishop? How many in West Teignmouth?

    Whereas about one hundred families, there is one only Dissenter & she is a Roman Catholick there is no Meeting House in the parish.

  2. Public or charity schools: There is a Charity School endowd with eighteen pounds a year for the maintenance of tenn Boys & tenn Girls, the dame of the School has only five pound Yearly with the priveledge of living rent free in the House built for that purpose the rest of the money, after the house repaird, is to buy Books Fuel in the Winter & Some Cloathes for the poorest peoples Children. This Charity School was founded by one Christopher Coleman of Teington Bishop.

  3. Alms-house, hospital or charitable endowment: There are three indifferent houses, in which Such as receive pay of the poor wardens live, but I never heard of any Charitable endowments, The Church is repaird by a general Rate.

  4. Residence upon cure: I reside in my Vicaridge house.

  5. Curate: I have a Curate living constantly in West Teingo. to whom I allow all the Small Tythes excepting of one Estate of Sixteen pounds yearly, & which allway paid tythe to the Vicar of Teington Bishop.

  6. Divine service at other churches: No.

  7. Frequency of divine service: Divine Service is performd twice every Lords Day, with Sermon in the fore & afternoon.

  8. Frequency of communion: On the first Sunday of Every Month besides Christmas day Easter day & Whitsunday.

  9. Number of communicants: At Easter last I was confind to my Bed by the Gout; when there was a Sermon preached & prayers read in the Afternoon, but on WhitSunday last, as nigh as I can remember more than fourscore communicated. There are two hundred & fifty Communicants in the parish.

  10. Catechising of children: Charity Children are Catechizd on Saints or Festival days when prayers are allway read, the Children & Servants of the rest of my parish are catechiz'd on Sundays in the Afternoon the parishoners send their Children & Servants constantly to be instructed.

  11. Chapels or chapels in ruins: West Teingmo. is a Chapel belonging to Teington Bishop and one mile distant from it, it is Supplyed by a Curate constantly living on it (whose name is Elias Carter AB & has livd there more than forty years, there is a ruinous Chapel about three quarters of a mile distant from Teingmouth calld Magdelen Chapel, The old Feoffees say that when the French burnt Teingmouth the Feoffment Deed was destroyed, & they made a new One, in which they have Sett old all its Revenues on Teingmouth Chapel.

I never had Institution to any other Living but Bishops Teington neither do I know the date of Mr Eveleigh's Institution to his Living in Cornwall.

The following answers are given me by my Curate Mr. Elias Carter of West Teingmouth.

  1. There are about one hundred & fifty Families in the parish of West Teingmouth, one of which is a Roman Catholick; there is no licencd or other Meeting House in the parish.

  2. There are about a dozen Childeren taught to read by the charity of the late Sr John Elwill and his son of Exon.

  3. There is neither Alms house nor Hospital in the parish. There are two dwelling Houses and one Field of Ground of the value of six pound per annum given to the poor. There has been left to the repair of the church of West Teingmouth about thirty pounds per annum all which said premises are vested in the hands of Trustees.

  7. Divine Service is performed in the Church of West Teingmouth twice in thrice, & once in thrice in East Teingmouth.

  8. The holy Sacrament of the Lords Supper is administred in the parish Church of West Teingmo. six times every year.

  9. There are about 350 Communicants in the parish of West Teingmo., There usualy recd between Sixty & a hundred at a Time, about Seventy receiv'd last Easter.

  10. The Children are catechisd on Sundays in the afternoon in the Summer Season in the parish Church of West Teingmouth. The parishioners Send their Childeren & Servants to be instructed.

    NB: Omitted in my answer to the 2d Querie Fifty Shillings yearly of Eighteen pounds there mention'd is to be given to fifty poor Labourers of Teington Bishop every Year who do not receive pay of the Parish.
